Scapa is one of the northernmost distilleries in Europe: it is located in the Orkneys, an archipelago of over 67 islands to the extreme north of Scotland.

The distillery was founded by John Townsend and MacFarlane, Glasgow distillers, on the shores of the famous Scapa Flow.

During the first world war, the distillery narrowly escaped being destroyed by fire, thanks to the intervention of the Royal Navy. It was then used as a munitions depot by the British army.

In 1936 the distillery was acquired by the Bloch brothers. In 1954 it was sold to Hiram Walker, who completely rebuilt it 5 years later. Since January 2006, Scapa has belonged to the Pernod Ricard group.

Scapa is distilled in very small stills of a rare design, known as Lomond stills. It mainly produces single malts, with a very few blends. Just three people run the distillery, ensuring high quality production. Scapa production is limited to 200,000 litres per annum.

Scapa 'Skiren', Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Crafted by five dedicated artisans at the manually operated Scapa distillery, Scapa Skiren’s smooth taste embodies the unexpected contrasts of the Orkney Islands, setting it apart from traditional Island Malts. A unique barrel-shaped Lomond wash still, the only remaining working Lomond in the Scotch whisky industry, is used for distillation, resulting in a richer and fruiter honeyed spirit. Exclusive maturation in First Fill American Oak casks gives Scapa Skiren a smooth creamy sweetness with a hint of tropical, citrus fruit and coastal heather, uncommon for an Island Single Malt but distinctly Scapa at its core.

Scapa Skiren gets its name from the Old Norse for glittering bright skies and lights up the senses with its delicate scented floral flavours as well as fresh pear, sweet and fruity pineapple notes on the nose. The smooth and sweet taste of ripe honeydew melon slices as well as bursts of fruity pear contrast with the tantalizing taste of sweet sherbet on the palate. The end result is a long refreshing sweetness.

Scapa 16 yr old, Single Malt Scotch Whisky

"From the Orkney Islands, also known as the "old adventure islands", at the far northern tip of Scotland, Scapa is a honey-coloured single malt with extremely original floral and iodine notes. Aged in casks stored on the seashore, this whisky with a non-peaty bouquet, rich and spicy, reveals a unique character. A rare whisky, in limited production. Scapa shows perfect balance on the palate. Aromas of dried fruit and subtle notes of oranges, wild honey and heather add to the finesse of this whisky: a slightly spicy taste, and an absolutely matchless smooth, long finish." (ref: Pernod)
