500 ml, 51.4% abv, JapanWhisky From The Barrel forms part of a series of vatted whiskies that are released by Nikka. Vatted whiskies are produced using single malts that are mixed together. These single malts may be of differing ages and from different distilleries. They are similar to blended whiskies in this respect, but blends include whisky made from other grains. Vatted whiskies only include single malt whisky produced from malted barley. In this case, Nikka have used different ages of single malt from both Miyagikyo and Yoichi and married them together over time. "Whisky From The Barrel" is a multi award winning whisky, including scooping the Best Japanese Blended/Vatted Whisky prize at The World Whisky Awards 2007 and 2010.
This Blend is produced with grain and malt from Miyagikyo and malt from Yoichi distillery. Nikka from the barrel is matured in first fill bourbon casks.

After blending the whisky is matured for a further 6 months in Amontillado casks. The casks used are intensely flavoured solera butts infused for many years with premium Amontillado Napoleon. Islay malts take their characteristics both from the local peat used to dry the barley and their closeness to the sea. These factors, typically, imbue the malts with a distinctive sea-weedy, phenolic and peaty flavour. Smokey Joe is bottled at 46% ABV to enhance impact and flavour. The whisky that makes up Smokey Joe has been selected for its highly engaging nose, balance of smoke and peppery spice on the palate and a lingering finish. And it’s here to stay as a permanent extension of the core range. Skye has been made from a combination of whiskies matured in refill, American oak ex-bourbon and freshly charred casks to bring out a lot more vanilla and spice than would traditionally be found. In contrast, Storm is the more heavily peated cousin, and Port Ruighe is finished in port pipes.
