While hunting for the perfect spot for his distillery, Hopkins discovered the Granty Burn – an untouched stream hidden in a secluded Speyside valley. He knew that the exceptionally pure water of this burn would produce a remarkable whisky with a naturally refreshing character. Hopkins founded the Speyburn distillery in 1897 right there in the glen, using authentic river stones from the bed of the fast-flowing River Spey itself. Over 100 years after its founding, Speyburn remains the only distillery to use the pure, crystal-clear water of the Granty Burn.
In 2016 Speyburn completed a renovation and expansion of existing distillery buildings. The new distillery combines the very latest energy efficient technology with traditional techniques, stonework and craftsmanship. The distillery’s production capacity has been doubled from 1.8 million litres to over 4 million litres per year.
The New York International Spirits Competition recently named Speyburn as their 2016 Speyside Distillery of the Year.
