It is approximately 90% ex-American oak and 10% ex-European oak, and is named after Svein, one of the central characters mentioned in the legendary Nordic book Orkneyinga Saga. This book charts the journeys and innovations of the Nordic people and warriors in and around Orkney. "the nose is full of soft earthy smoke and vanilla and honey aromas. There are also hints of wood spice, cereals and orange oil" "a mix of woody, spicy notes along with honey, vanilla, burnt caramel and some dried fruits, particularly sultana and tangy candied orange. The bottler, Vintage Malt Whisky, is not allowed to reveal which distillery it is from, other than it is from Islay. Finlaggan, the centre of the Lordship of the Isles, is an island settlement in the beautiful secluded Loch Finlaggan in the north east corner of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. There are two islands, the larger is called Eilean Mòr (large island).

The worts are fermented for roughly 75 hours then the spirit is double distilled, slowly, first through the wash still and then through the spirit still. Following distillation, the whisky is matured in two different types of casks; 80% in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and the final 20% in first-fill Oloroso sherry hogsheads.

350 ml, 43.0% abv, New ZealandYears ago, in the Willowbank distillery in Dunedin, a batch of whisky was made in the distillery’s pot-stills using un-malted barley. This “single grain whisky” was then blended with 70% of their single malt, and placed into American Oak, ex-bourbon barrels. Twenty-one years later, carefully selected casks have been bottled as “High Wheeler”.

Ardbeg An Oa is singularly rounded, due in no small part to time spent in the newly established bespoke oak Gathering Vat where whiskies from several cask types - including; sweet Pedro Ximenez; spicy virgin charred oak; and intense ex-bourbon casks, amongst others - familiarise themselves with each other. The result is a dram with smoky power, mellowed by a delectable, smooth sweetness. Hallmark Ardbeg peat, dark chocolate and aniseed are wrapped in smooth, silky butterscotch, black pepper and clove, before rising to an intense crescendo of flavour.
700ml, 42.0%abv, Scotland, (Highland)“Fior” means pure or true in Gaelic, and this, no age statement bottling launched in summer 2010, is something of a rebirth for the Fettercairn distillery. Fior contains 15 percent heavily peated whisky matured in first fill ex-bourbon barrels, along with a proportion of 14 and 15 year old spirit. The result is a bold and complex whisky with real nose presence, smoke, sherry, toffee, vanilla, and oranges merge on the nose, while the palate showcases more smoke and toffee, plus spices, oak, and licorice in the lengthy finish.
“Honey gold in colour, with aromas of crushed pear, toffee apple and hints of cinnamon and vanilla. A kiss of peat smoke with hazelnuts, orange rind, ginger and coriander complete the nose.
Taste is of bold dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans and peat smoke fused with nutmeg, mint, citrus fruits and truffle. The lingering finish proffers sherry trifle, marzipan and pineapple.”
