This special edition of Islay Mist was created in close collaboration with Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana of Spain, whose vineyards are at the highest altitude of the entire Jerez (Sherry) district. This Islay Mist is a blend of whiskies matured for a minimum of 8 years, gentle Lowland grain, Highland malt and peaty, smoky, Islay malt whisky from Laphroaig. After blending the whisky is matured for a further 6 months in Manzanilla La Gitana casks. The casks used are intensely flavoured solera butts infused for many years with premium Manzanilla Sherry.
Nose : A melange of barley and tart citrus with hints of greengage, bog myrtle, and camphor. Some dusty / earthy spice and peat emerge with a hint of grain spirit.
Palate : Full, barley with coffeed wood tannins, and earth. A waft of smoke comes through with hints of tar, iodine and coastal peat. The peat becomes more dominant on the middle.
Finish : Long with the citrus, salt and grain spirit giving it a mouth tingling finish. Lovely, sooty, tarry after-taste.
Comment : That’s how to make a great blend! The Islay component dominates, but you can’t argue with quality.
